Ever since SmartWool changed their material mix for the worse, I’ve been on the hunt for a replacement. I run about 35 mile weeks in SoCal, so I care that my socks are both durable and wick moisture well.

This is honestly one of the best brands of socks that I have ever worn. I currently reside in Florida and work outdoors, so wet, sore, smelly feet, and calluses are a real issue for me. So far this sock has highly outperformed any I have ever worn. The bottom is padded, but it is not so thick that it adds a lot of bulk to the sock. The material is soft and comfortable, but feels very rugged and high-quality. The sock itself, from the toe to the heel, fits as expected for my size 13 feet, with the exception of the ankle portion of the sock (more on that in a moment). All in all, this was a smart purchase on my part, and I have been stocking up on these comfy little guys since I got my first pair.

Remember that episode of Seinfeld when Elaine’s boss Mr. Pitt keeps rejecting all the socks she’d dutifully purchased for him? Finding the right pair of socks is kinda like that. We’re all very particular.

Being a distance runner (I run 20-30 *hard* trail miles a week), I wanted a shorter sock I could wear with my compression sleeves. Well…

Men’s Size Medium fits Women’s size 9.5 Wide or 10 Wide foot very well!

I cannot say enough good things about these wool socks. I naturally rub blisters VERY easily because of the way my foot is shaped. I have to wear wool socks, slather my feet in friction block (like body glide) and only wear good quality shoes. To make matters worse, I am a woman’s wide size so everything for my feet is expensive and difficult to find in the right size.

I run 35-70 miles / week (wide variance attributed to where I may be in a marathon training schedule) and am looking to shift from pure synthetic to a wool blend to better accommodate the seasonal temp changes in N. TX. My initial test was two different Darn Tough running socks (these and

Great Sock- odd sizing between colors??

I originally ordered the orange/gray option, and absolutely love it. I wear a size 12 shoe and the large fits snug (which i like). My wife bought me the black version of the same sock recently, and it (size large also) fits noticeably more loose than the orange/gray. I eventually ordered the same two colors again together (cuz these are awesome socks), and before putting them on, set them side by side for a quick comparison. Its easy to see the black is bigger again. Not sure if this is an issue with other colors / sizes, but thought it’d point it out. Knocked a star for this, cuz it’d be nice if the was constant across the two colors…oh well, still my favorite sock.

Squishy after 8 miles

Got a pair of these thanks to a recommendation from a New York Times writer. Made in VT. Not crazy expensive. Not my first pair of padded running socks. But I forgot why I don’t wear running socks for the most part. I’m a 6’3, 250+ lbs guy who sweats a lot when he goes on long runs. Just this morning, on a 10-mile run, I noticed that by around eight miles into it my feet felt squishy. The socks’ extra padding absorbed the deluge rolling down my legs from my shirt and shorts. I’ll keep using these socks on runs <5K and stick with my regular $4 pairs of Woolrich socks for long runs.

I picked these up alongside a few other pairs of “high-end” socks for a backpacking trip through southeast asia. After reading through nearly a hundred different sock reviews (exciting I know), I finally decided on my final 3 pairs:

These converted me from SmartWool

These socks made me convert from SmartWool. I was a SmartWool evangelist for years, but I kept wearing through the heels and were disappointed by the lack of a lifetime warranty so I decided to try something new. I was thrilled that these fit comparably to SmartWool, were no warmer, and were backed by a lifetime warranty. Over the last two years I’ve purchased close to 12 pairs of Darn Tough’s but have yet to come close to wearing any out, so I may never need the warranty but it’s a nice piece of mind to know I’m covered in case my $15 sock does eventually wear out.
